Update 5 (Possible Solution) Looking at the client more carefully I noticed rpcbind seems to always be on port 3421 (I thought it was random initially). I'm guessing that an IPv6 address is being given to the kernel, so it tries to talk to rpcbind, but as only portmap is listening, it has problems.
